Vegan Eateries in Auckland
I was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand. During my 24 years, I have gradually and happily watched the vegan and vegetarian options (and community!) grow to an extent that my taste bud's are so very happy with. These, my friends, are my favourite vegan eateries in Auckland, New Zealand.
I have been known (frequently) to make a 20 minute detour just to get a pie & doughnut from Tart – a 100% vegan bakery located in Grey Lynn (& another recently opened on Karangahape Road!).
Voted by the NZ Herald as the Best Bakery in New Zealand in 2017, it is my absolute favourite vegan eatery in Auckland. I’ve heard plenty of non-vegetarians unknowingly rave about how good the “sausage” rolls are.
My Top Pick -The Cronut
Family Tip - If you’re in Grey Lynn take your treats over to Grey Lynn park – the perfect place for a picnic with a playground for the kids.
Rule #1 of going to Giapo - never go on a full stomach. You will not want to waste one bight of these rich, artistic ice-creams.
Giapo has a separate vegan menu with coconut cream/soy based ice creams such as: Coconut Chocolate Chip, NZ Blackberry & Martini Rosso, Kiwifruit & Garden Coriander and Kofe Samoa.
The perfect date night dessert – head down to the waterfront, ice-cream in hand, to see the nightlife and ocean view.
My Top Pick: Coconut Chocolate Chip
It’s the kind of place where I need ten minutes to just stare at the menu in awe.
From vegan French toast to vegan Malai Kofta – Rabbit offers a variety of food that looks beautiful and tastes amazing. The atmosphere is great, staff are friendly the vegan options are bewilderingly exciting!
My Top Pick: Vegan Malai Kofta.
Sunflower, in Auckland City, offers a huge menu of vegetarian and vegan Thai options. Appetizers include curry puffs and spring rolls while mains range from pad Thai to “fish” and chips. I’ve been going here for years and love the coziness and comfort foods.
Top Picks: Curry Puffs & Dumpling Soup
Little Bird Unbakery
These cafes offer organic and raw vegan options in a modern setting. From vegan cheesecakes to detox juices, Little Bird is perfect for those wanting to still feel healthy while treating themselves!
My Top Pick: The raw cheesecake is bliss!
Huckleberry Cafe joins onto the Huckleberry health food store where you can find lots of super foods and vegan treats. The café itself offers vegan options including cakes, smoothies, falafel wraps and hot foot menu options such as Coconut Buckwheat Crepes (pictured above).
My Top Picks: Coconut Buckwheat Crepes and the Apple Pie Smoothie.
Family Friendly Tips: Huckleberry Cafe has an indoor kids play area as well as an outdoor playhouse & slide.
Hell’s offers gourmet pizzas and vegan pizza options that include VEGAN CHEESE! There are a few vegan options to choose from but I always go for the Creator Pizza: you choose your base, toppings, size, herbs and spices…everything! (Just be sure to select the dairy free cheese option).
My Top Pick: Creator pizza with spinach, tomato, olives, capers, sun dried tomato, salt, pepper, oregano & vegan cheese.
A takeaway or eat-in burger eatery, Burger Fuel is a safe bet wherever you are in New Zealand. Vegan options include the V8 Vegan Burger, Combustion Tofu (switch to vegan aioli to make it vegan), motobites and soy thick shakes. You can order online or in store. Super tasty.
So, there you have it. These are only a few of the vegan options available in Auckland but they are definitely my most visited! Have any of them made it to the top of your list?
